It’s time for all parents and students applying for college financial aid for the 2023-24 academic year, to gather your background documentation and get started by going to StudentAid.gov.
Helpful Suggestions:
Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically populate and verify information from your federal tax returns
Complete the FAFSA before the financial aid deadline for the earliest school being applied to (often this is November 1st for Early Action)
List up to ten colleges that will get your FAFSA application and check here to see if your state has requirements about the order of the colleges you list (in order to get state aid)
Do not count the same asset in two different categories, only include it once
Remember that 529 plans for a student beneficiary, but with a parent custodian, are counted as a parental asset (more advantageous for getting aid)
Both student and parent need their own FAFSA ID in order to sign completed form
