Coastal Carolina; Studies in PGA Golf Management, Intelligence & National Security, and More!

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

When I visited the Coastal Carolina University campus in August, my tour guide did an excellent job of guiding us around the beautiful campus and highlighting the wide variety of offerings – from an 18-hole golf facility to the natural lab for marine science and wetlands biology to the AACSB International accreditation for their business school. With 95 majors, a focus on experiential learning, Division 1 athletics, and an honors college, this campus has many reasons to attract a diverse student body – about ½ of which come from South Carolina and the other ½ from out-of-state or out-of-country.

There are also two accelerated programs in which students can earn degrees in a shorter timeframe; the Degree in Three program including summer classes, and the Get More in Four program ending in a master’s degree. I have to give another shoutout for the Coastal Carolina University LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone) Program which offers a four-year certificate program while providing extra support for students with mild to moderate intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

Located in Conway, South Carolina, only 9 miles west of Myrtle Beach on the Atlantic Ocean, there are plenty of opportunities for social engagement on-campus and off-campus. The university also has a hugely popular bike rental program, Coastal Cycles, which has 600 bikes that students can rent for free for 30 days at a time. Since the program began in 2010, they have seen a sharp rise in the use of bikes as an environmentally sustainable mode of transportation. The campus Outdoor Center provides low-cost rentals for kayaks, paddleboards, and camping/fishing gear and also organizes student outings throughout the year.

As a public university, Coastal Carolina offers in-state tuition for South Carolina residents and they also have a number of merit awards, the highest levels of which help to bring the out-of-state tuition very close to the in-state levels. Interested students can learn more from their website and by visiting, either in-person or virtually.
