This small private liberal arts college is grounded in their Humanics philosophy - the Greek ideal of a balanced person and an education focusing on the interconnectedness of an individual’s emotional, intellectual, and physical life. Springfield’s mission includes helping students develop holistically so they can serve as leaders in their future workplaces and communities, by giving back and helping to make a difference.
Approximately 3,300 students study on this 100-acre lakefront campus in Springfield, MA, and, as a whole, they participate in more than 120,000 hours of community service annually. Students also have more than 60 student organizations, 26 NCAA Division III teams/15 club sports, and an Honors College that they can get involved in.
Springfield offers more than 40 degree program options, including niche choices like Therapeutic Recreation, Addiction Studies, Gerontology, and Public History/Museum Studies. With an 11-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio and average class size of 20, students have many opportunities for making connections. Also, I want to mention that 100% of new undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid.
Another fun fact about Springfield College is that it is known as the birthplace of basketball because their graduate student, James Naismith, invented the game in 1891 while at Springfield College, in order to provide athletes with an indoor sport for the winter.
