You Can Think Outside at Eckerd College

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

The second college on my Florida tour this week was Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, where you can literally “think outside” as their motto says. On my campus tour I saw two different classes taking place outside and a pair of students working with the horseshoe crabs they are studying that are in an outside tank.

Or maybe the Eckerd motto is referring to “thinking outside the box” as they do have unique 4-1-4 academic calendar (with two regular semesters and one shorter Winter term each year) and their lovely waterfront setting offers a beach, activities like sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and fishing, as well as a living laboratory for students.

This small liberal arts college has a diverse student body of about 2,000 students (with 78% from outside the state of Florida) who select Eckerd for the small class sizes, mentorship, and one of over 40 majors – including Marine Science, not surprisingly. Their Search and Rescue Team gives interested students the chance to work in cooperation with the Coast Guard and other agencies on over 500 maritime distress calls annually. They have an Honors Program, Campus Farm, Pets-in-Residence Program, and many leadership and service learning opportunities. To help with their private school price tag, they offer both merit scholarships and need-based aid to incoming students that qualify.

There are many colleges and universities available to students, depending on their interests and career goals.
