Visiting the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and SUNY New Paltz, 1.5 hours upstate from there, gave me a chance to see the impressive options that students studying the arts have at these two different New York colleges. Both are mid-size institutions, with 5,200 to 6,400 students, that are well known for their focus on fine and performing arts, but each offers a variety of other programs as well.
Pratt has three campuses, offering students a choice of setting from the bustling pace of Manhattan to the 25-acre traditional residential campus in Brooklyn, to their extension campus upstate in the small town of Utica where students in certain majors can spend their first two years at a smaller campus with the renowned MWPAI Museum of Art before relocating to the Brooklyn campus for the final two years. Pratt also has programs in architecture, design, liberal arts, and more. A bonus highlight of my Brooklyn visit was the beautiful outdoor sculpture garden on campus, which is free and open to the public.
The next stop on my art school tour was the State University of New York at New Paltz, a public liberal arts college with a suburban setting in the artsy town of New Paltz. In addition to offering nationally accredited programs in the arts with several well-equipped buildings and gallery spaces, they have a wide variety of programs in business, education, liberal arts, sciences, and engineering. So, for students who want to explore multiple disciplines, the offerings are plentiful. Also of note is the highly regarded honors program and the public state university price tag which may attract families as well.
