Serving approximately 1,000 curious, creative, and open-minded students, Beloit College works to foster an engagement in learning that never stops. Here students study things they are passionate about, with a curriculum that allows them to go deep and combine their interests within multiple majors and minors (over one third of Beloiters double major). The 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio and small class sizes allow faculty to take a personal interest in their students and get really involved with them.Â
Beloiters are encouraged to sample new ideas and find lessons in everything. An example of the depth of learning taking place at Beloit College, are the fall student presentations and Spring Symposiums for students to present their research. Impressively, Beloit College is also home to two teaching museums - the Logan Museum of Anthropology (100+ years old and over 300,000 objects) and the Wright Museum of Art (4,500+ permanent collection pieces) - which students use for research and classwork. Another shoutout is the 120,000 sq. foot Powerhouse (student union, recreation center and athletics facility all in one) which was renovated from a former power plant and now is the hub of campus.
This innovative liberal arts college located right on the border of Wisconsin and Illinois has a diverse student population with 15-20% international students and the rest from all over the USA. (The college helps facilitate access with regional and shuttle buses to O’Hare International Airport (1.5 hours away)). With D3 sports, active Greek life, theatre productions, and over 55 clubs and organizations, students find many ways to get involved, develop leadership skills, and make social connections. Most students (90%) live on campus in housing of all sorts (including Greek houses and interest-based thematic options) throughout their college years, but the residency requirement is only for three years.
Located only a few walkable blocks away, two of the college buildings are located in downtown Beloit - the 18,000 sq. foot Center for Entrepreneurship (for student start-up ventures complete with recording studios, a maker lab, and more) and the college’s performing arts center. This integration further facilitates the campus and local community bonds, fostering partnerships for internships.
Both the town of Beloit, with 37,000 residents, and the college are located on the Rock River, which has historic trails, kayaking/canoeing, and easy access to nature. In addition to the many campus offerings, downtown Beloit has a variety of interesting shops and eateries which students enjoy. Shoutout for my lunch at Bushel & Peck’s - a bookstore, plant nursery, restaurant, and small market all in one! In addition to the amenities locally, students can participate in bigger city offerings with a drive to downtown Chicago (96 miles), Milwaukee (78 miles), or Madison (54 miles).Â
A testament to the longevity of this amazing small college is that Beloit College is Wisconsin’s oldest continuously operating college since its founding in 1846. They have also been called out for their accomplishments in several books, including Colleges That Change Lives and Small College Magic.
For students interested in applying to Beloit College, the admissions process involves a holistic application review (with good attention paid to the essay) and automatic consideration for significant merit scholarships. They also offer a FAFSA filing grant, a campus visit grant, and a flagship tuition match for midwest institutions for students with a 3.5+ GPA.
