This public research university in coastal Norfolk, VA has had top rankings as “Best for Vets” and as a “Military Friendly School” for many years. Close to Naval Station Norfolk and with ¼ of the student body having a U.S. military affiliation, Old Dominion University has a military connection center on campus and dedicated programs and support services for these students. They even have a special Military Tuition Rate for eligible undergraduate active duty in-state military personnel with a tuition cost estimated at less than $8,000 annually. (Comparatively, the in-state regular tuition is just under $12,000/year and out-of-state tuition is approximately $31,500/year.)
Located on 337 acres, Old Dominion serves more than 24,000 students pursuing studies in over 175 different degree programs. The walkable urban campus is located within the Norfolk Innovation Corridor (a technology zone) which provides a large number of nearby internship opportunities. Students can get involved in some of the 250+ student organizations, Greek life, NCAA Division 1 sports, distance learning, relaxation at nearby beaches, and more!
During my campus visit, I spotted this student-made vehicle (pictured), which led me to get more information on the engineering offerings. It turns out their Batten College of Engineering & Technology has nearly 50 different degree programs across five engineering departments, and there are many hands-on project-oriented opportunities for students to put what they’ve learned into action.
