This private Christian university in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania serves approximately 3,300 students in over 80 bachelor’s and master’s programs. From offerings in health services (like athletic training and nursing) to business programs to science and engineering, there are many choices for students who would like to pursue a rigorous academic curriculum in a Christian context.
Messiah students can get involved in over 60 clubs and organizations as well as athletic teams, research opportunities, service learning, internships, study-abroad opportunities, and an honors program. The university has a reputation for integrating the Christian faith into all of their academic programs and activities. And their “mission is to educate men and women toward maturity of intellect, character and Christian faith in preparation for lives of service, leadership and reconciliation in church and society.”
When I visited the 471-acre campus, I enjoyed seeing the Oakes Museum of Natural History - a 10,000-square-foot museum located on the first two floors of the Jordan Science Center. The museum serves as a learning environment for students in many different disciplines and provides them with opportunities for internships and volunteer activities. It’s also open to the public on Saturdays!
Another shoutout is the Messiah University dual-enrollment program in which high school students can take college courses - at a reduced tuition rate - to satisfy both high school and college credit requirements. Whether the students end up attending Messiah or another institution, they can get a head start on college coursework (on-campus or online) - exploring areas of interest and potentially shortening the number of semesters they have left to earn a degree, thereby saving money in the process. Another consideration for college funding is that all new students can expect to get some financial support from Messiah!
